The Artist's Statement:
My work is often inspired by the Earth and its atmosphere. When beginning a painting, I start with a line which refers to that interactive zone at the horizon. Next, I flood the surface above, or below the line with water. I then float liquid paint into the water. As the water moves, the pigment flows with it. As the water evaporates, the pigment settles onto the paper, panel, or canvas, creating a record of where and how the paint and water traveled. I may, or may not, wait until the first section has dried before repeating the process on the unpainted section. Sometimes the water and pigment cross through the barrier of the painted horizon line, in some sort of osmotic reaction.

While painting, I watch the flow of water, and the transport of pigment. It is very much like watching the interaction of air, water, light and color over land, sea, and sky. Each painting seems to be a microcosm of the earth’s atmospheric activities. I continue with each image until the painting comes into a visual balance that represents the delicate equilibrium of our natural environment.
